Take a look at this post where I posted photos of butterfly eyes up close.
My next Portfolio Post is on the model organism Drosophila melanogaster or the fruit fly. It will be an ongoing post – updates will be posted to the blog.
My next Portfolio Post is on Green Fluorescent Protein. It will be an ongoing post – updates will be posted to the blog.
My most recent portfolio post is the first in a series I’m planning to do on Nobel Prizes.
For many of the awards, there is a layperson’s explanation of the technology, history, and reason for the choice available on the Nobel website (Information for the Public pdf).
There are also some nice illustrations in these explanations. The blue LED Information for the Public pdf had not been released when I finished my illustrations. So I’ll be doing another post comparing the different illustrations soon.
I, like many scientists, get wrapped up in a small area of research and forget how much I had to learn to get there. When explaining what I do, I leave out important stuff while including unneeded information.
To work on this, I took a scientific illustration course with Nigel Orme and Maddy Pikarsky. Our final assignment was to “draw our research.” I spent hours thinking and drawing complex diagrams that were overly technical. After talking to some of my fellow grad students, I was able to come up with this image.
I’m planning to return to this image and I hope to improve it over time.
